I Hate Exercise BUT I love how it makes me feel.  I shouldn’t use the word hate, that’s a little strong and I don’t really dislike the exercise.  I get bored easily during it and I feel like I’m taking time out of my day that I could be doing other things.  I’m sure you understand and can relate to what I mean.

Having said that, this could go into an whole other issue of self care and that is extremely important.  If you don’t take care of yourself you will not be able to help and take care of others.  Plain and simple.  I will blog another day on this subject.

Many people do not realize the importance of some form of exercise…..stretching, aerobics, yoga, walking, bike riding, etc.  They will say “I’m busy all day” or “I run around all day at work or after the kids”.  It is not the same.  You must challenge your body and raise your heart rate.

I worked for a cardiologist for 6  years and the most important thing I had to stress daily to patients was that their heart is a muscle.  If you do not work that muscle, it weakens and so do all the other muscles in your body.  You need your muscles to be in shape for everything you do in life.  You need your flexibility and another very important fact is that muscle burns fat.  You begin losing muscle mass if you are inactive and as we age.

The best form of exercise to begin with is walking.  Walking outdoors is so rewarding physically and spiritually.  Being in nature, taking in the scenery and fresh out door air is healing for your mind, body & spirit.  If weather does not permit you to go outdoors, you may consider a treadmill.  This is where boredom sneaks in on me……walking in a room looking at wall…. so playing music or having a TV in front of the treadmill will help keep your mind occupied.  It is said that you need to walk at least 30 minutes daily and that is ideal BUT if you have been inactive for some time you  may not be able to do a full 30 minutes in the beginning.  Begin with 10 minutes daily for the first few days and then begin adding 5 minutes more every 3 days.  You will be able to do it.  Dress comfortably, wear good shoes and drink water…stay hydrated.  It is good to sweat.  You will want to make sure your body is properly mineralized to replace lost electrolytes, especially from sweating…especially potassium which is very important to the muscles.

Occasionally when an inactive person begins exercising, their system can go into a mild detox state.  Some symptoms can include tiredness, mild headache or feeling like you are coming down with a cold.  Recognize it as a good sign that your body has begun healing its self and drink lots of water.  Adding lemon to your water is a great detoxifier.

Don’t wait another minute, another day.  Begin walking today and you will definitely notice a difference in how you feel.  I promise !  The hardest part is getting started but your will be glad you did.
